Barrasso Move to Deny Driver’s Licenses to Illegals Endorsed

WASHINGTON – Three of the nation’s most prominent groups opposed to illegal immigration, have endorsed U.S. Senator John Barrasso’s legislation discouraging states from issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

NumbersUSA with over 500,000 members and the Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR), boasting more than quarter of a million members and the Coalition for a Secure Driver’s License (CSDL) with members in 48 of the 50 states, have endorsed the “Barrasso No License for Illegals Bill” (S.2334).

In a letter to Senator Barrasso, NumbersUSA President Roy Beck states; “The handful of states issuing official driver’s licenses to illegal aliens, aid and abet the aliens’ ability to avoid being held accountable.  Indeed, driver’s licenses issued to illegal aliens put the American public at risk because licenses are used almost routinely in daily life to verify ones identity.”

FAIR President, Dan Stein also endorsed the Barrasso bill.  “U.S. driver’s licenses are coveted by illegal immigrants who want to live and work in the United States undetected. History has also taught us that they are desired by terrorists and criminals who threaten our national security.”

CSDL President, Brian Zimmer offered strong support to the Barrasso bill. “Lawful presence should be a universal requirement for state issued ID cards and driver’s licenses. Senator Barrasso’s legislation will generate meaningful pressure for the remaining states that provide cover identities via state issued IDs to non U.S. citizens who overstay visas or have otherwise entered the United States illegally.”

Under the “Barrasso No License for Illegals Bill”, states must verify that each driver’s license applicant is in the U.S. legally. Noncompliant states would lose 10 percent of their federal transportation funds. The withheld funds would be redistributed to states that follow the law.

“I have a responsibility to the people of Wyoming and the Senate has a duty to the people of the U.S. to eliminate illegal immigration,” Barrasso said.  “This bill is a small, but ultimately achievable first step.”

Barrasso promised to continue pushing legislation to prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining driver’s licenses.

Wyoming does not issue driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants. Furthermore, Wyoming could gain more highway dollars with the enactment of Barrasso’s bill.
