Barrasso: Senate Should Pay More Attention to START Consequences, Less Attention to Calendar

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) called on Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to ensure the Senate has adequate time to fix the new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START).  Barrasso, a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, delivered the following statement:

“The new START treaty significantly impacts America’s national security and nuclear deterrent.
The Senate should pay more attention to the full consequences of START and less attention to the lame duck calendar.  The full Senate needs adequate time to hear all sides of the debate, vote on all the amendments, and fix this flawed treaty.  Majority Leader Reid should not push this legislation through in the last few days of the 111th Congress.”

On December 1, 2010, Senator Barrasso authored an op-ed in the Hill newspaper regarding the START treaty.
