Barrasso Slams Democrats for Delaying Confirmation of Trump National Security Team

“Our world is far too dangerous to delay confirming Mr. Ratcliffe. I hope my Democrat colleagues don’t have plans this weekend. Because I guarantee you the Senate is going to be here, in Washington, voting to confirm President Trump’s nominees. Get ready for late nights and long hours.”

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Senate Majority Whip, today spoke on the Senate floor about how Senate Republicans are moving quickly to confirm President Donald J. Trump’s nominees. Senator Barrasso also slammed Democrats for delaying the confirmation vote of several national security nominees, including John Ratcliffe to lead the Central Intelligence Agency.

Sen. Barrasso remarks as prepared:

“Yesterday, I met with President Trump at the White House.

“I shared with him that his nominees have strong support in the United States Senate.

“As I assured President Trump, the Senate will work around the clock to confirm his nominees.

“As a matter of fact, President Trump invited several of us to travel with him later this week. He’s going to North Carolina and Los Angeles to see the impact of the disasters and the devastation in both places.

“We thanked him and told him we have pressing responsibilities here in Washington, D.C.

“We are prepared to work late nights and long weekends if Democrats choose to deliberately delay. And that’s exactly what we are going to do.

“Last night, Democrats decided to stall the confirmation of John Ratcliffe.

“Mr. Ratcliffe is President Trump’s nominee to be Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. His nomination is completely bipartisan. He received a vote of 14-3 in the Intelligence Committee.

“Last night, Democrats chose last minute obstruction anyway.

“What is happening here is shameful. Our world is far too dangerous to delay confirming Mr. Ratcliffe.

“I hope my Democrat colleagues don’t have plans this weekend. Because I guarantee you the Senate is going to be here, in Washington, voting to confirm President Trump’s nominees.

“Get ready for late nights and long hours.

“We will be here on Thursday, on Friday, on Saturday, and on Sunday if we have to.

“When we say we’d work around the clock, we mean it.

“This is what Americans voted for.

“According to a recent Fox News poll, 78 percent of Americans say Democrats should work with President Trump.

“The American people elected President Trump to change Washington. They voted for common sense. President Trump is a common-sense President.

“President Trump has proposed an agenda that is popular, optimistic, and unifying. He has chosen a strong team to work with him.

“President Trump has not built a business-as-usual cabinet. His nominees are motivated. They are qualified. They are committed to Americans’ safety and prosperity.

“They will work aggressively to address the challenges of high prices, open borders, crime, America-Last energy policies, and burdensome regulations.

“Hours after President Trump was sworn in, Senators voted unanimously to confirm Marco Rubio to be Secretary of State.

“This week, we have several more nominees to consider.

“As the Senate exercises its constitutional duty, we should remember a couple key facts:

“First, President Obama had 7 cabinet nominees confirmed on his first day in office.

“Second, the current Democrat leader moved quickly to confirm President Biden’s nominees. He said that swift confirmation votes are ‘traditional for a new president.’

“Third, Democrats are supporting many of President Trump’s nominees in committee. This proves what we already knew: These are bold, bipartisan nominees.

“All but two Democrats voted with every Republican to support Kristi Noem, President Trump’s nominee
for Homeland Security Secretary. Her vote was 13-2.

“Several Democrats also voted with us to support Scott Bessent, President Trump’s nominee for Treasury Secretary.

“Let me remind my colleagues what Democrats have said about President Trump’s nominees.

“Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin introduced Sean Duffy at his hearing to be Secretary of Transportation. Senator Baldwin gave this glowing comment: Sean Duffy, she said, is ‘the right guy to help deliver for Wisconsin families, businesses, and workers.’

“Senator John Hickenlooper of Colorado introduced Chris Wright at his hearing to be Secretary of Energy. Senator Hickenlooper said this: Mr. Wright is ‘a scientist who has invested his life around energy.’

“Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona said Lee Zeldin is ‘a qualified candidate’ to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

“Senator Martin Heinrich of New Mexico said Doug Burgum is a ‘talented nominee’ to lead the Department of the Interior.

“Pay attention to these comments.

“Democrats know that President Trump’s nominees are qualified for the job.

“The Senate should give advice and consent. Disgruntled Democrats should not use the Senate’s constitutional power as an excuse to delay and deny.

“Americans want results, not resistance.”
