Despite promises from HHS Secretary Sebelius, dependents under the age of 26 are being dropped from health care coverage
This September, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius wrote to American medical students about how the new health care law will benefit both doctors and their patients. Secretary Sebelius promised:
“Many of you and your siblings are undoubtedly under the age of 26. Under the Affordable Care Act, you and your brothers or sisters will now be able to stay on your families’ insurance policies until you are 26.”
Only three months later, the Secretary’s promise has already been broken. Last week, SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, one of the largest local unions in America, announced that the new law is forcing it to drop coverage for about 6,000 children. As SEIU official Mitra Behroozi said:
“In addition, new federal health-care reform legislation requires plans with dependent coverage to expand that coverage up to age 26. Our limited resources are already stretched as far as possible, and meeting this new requirement would be financially impossible.”
The next generation of American doctors and all Americans deserve the truth about how Obamacare will impact their future practice.
Earlier this month, Senator Barrasso joined Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK), M.D. in writing their own letter to America’s medical students. Today, Senator John Barrasso spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate about about the latest victims of Obamacare and how the new law will change the practice of medicine.
